Knowledge Organisers

The EPIC curriculum at Hunter’s Bar Junior School is underpinned by essential knowledge, concepts and ideas that our pupils develop for each unit of enquiry. The ‘go-to’ document that we are using to bring this information together is called a Knowledge Organiser . This document sets out what we want children to know by the end of the unit. Each Knowledge Organiser is carefully designed to provide:

  • Tier 2 vocabulary - powerful words that can be used across the curriculum
  • Definitions of key terms
  • Important dates
  • Key conceptual ideas
  • Images to help children visualise a core concept

All of these elements aim to anchor pupils' knowledge within the unit.

By engaging with the organiser in the lessons and by using frequent, low stakes quizzing, we expect the majority of children to be able to recall the majority of the information by the end of the unit. Knowledge organisers can also be used at home as a springboard to help children pursue interests within the unit and to allow parents and carers to share the same knowledge with their children. We would love to hear how you are using them.

As well as a paper copy of your child’s Knowledge Organiser being available at the start of each enquiry, each year group will be uploading their Knowledge Organiser onto their year group's section of the school website.

If you have any questions about how best to use Knowledge Organisers at home or how we are using them at school, please speak to your child’s class teacher or Mr. Beauchamp.
