NEW: Spellings home learning

 

For homework, children will be given a list of statutory Year 3 and 4 spellings. Y3s will be starting their journey of learning a selection of these words.  Some of them are challenging and will need applying in sentences and discussed with an adult. Children need to be able to read and write these independently.

We suggest that children learn between four and ten words at home using the look, cover, write, check practice sheets (as included in the homelearning).

They will be tested in school by a friend at the end of the fortnight. Children will then tick off correct spellings on their own checklist in their classroom. We are encouraging our Y3s to be independent in managing this.

An important way that children (and the rest of us) can retain spellings is to be tested on them multiple times over a long period time. Learning them once is not enough! We suggest that children are tested frequently on all their learned spellings over the rest of the year. Fun quizzes with a mixture of spellings are a great way to do this! This should happen at school and a home.

Welcome back!

 

We hope you had a relaxing break and that the children are refreshed and ready to carry on their learning journeys in Y3.

This term we will explore what identity is and how we show our identity to others. We will think about our knowledge of the Arts from last half term and consider how we can use this to create dance, music, art and theatre to express our thoughts, feelings and identity.

Below is this half term's knowledge organiser which gives you all the powerful knowledge that the children will need to know in order to be successful and creative in their learning.

We look forward to seeing parents and carers on Wednesday afternoons at the parent-child workshops in J1, J2 and J3.

What is a Knowledge Organiser, anyway?
 

The EPIC curriculum at Hunter’s Bar Junior School is underpinned by essential knowledge, concepts and ideas that our pupils develop for each unit of enquiry. The ‘go-to’ document that we are using to bring this information together is called a Knowledge Organiser . This document sets out what we want children to know by the end of the unit. Each Knowledge Organiser is carefully designed to provide:

 

  • Tier 2 vocabulary - powerful words that can be used across the curriculum
  • Definitions of key terms
  • Important dates and people
  • Key conceptual ideas
  • Images to help children visualise a core concept

All of these elements aim to anchor pupils' knowledge within the unit. 

 

By engaging with the Knowledge Organiser in the lessons and by using frequent, low stakes quizzing, we expect the majority of children to be able to recall the majority of the information by the end of the unit. Knowledge organisers can also be used at home as a springboard to help children pursue interests within the unit and to allow parents and carers to share the same knowledge with their children. We would love to hear how you are using them.

 

If you have any questions about how best to use Knowledge Organisers at home or how we are using them at school, please speak to your child’s class teacher or Mr. Beauchamp.

Thankyou to all parents and carers who attended the Y3 pop-up museum experience in the last week of the term. It was a fantastic event that gave our learners a genuine and engaged audience to share their work with.

Y3 POP-UP Museum

You are invited to attend the Y3 Pop Up museum on Wednesday 19th December from 2:50 to 3:20. The children will be showcasing work from the past two themes on Ancient Egyptian artefacts and Prehistoric fossils!

'An introduction into Dinosaurs workshop'
 
The Y3s had a fantastic experience today at the DinoStar workshop, learning about dinosaurs through fossil analysis. The children got to hold real dinosaur eggs, claws, teeth and bones!

Welcome back to school!
Here is the new Knowledge Organiser for the current Y3 theme 'We use fossils to discover the secrets of prehistory'.
 
Please use this document at home to discuss the key facts, concepts and ideas that your child will be learning about in this half term's theme unit. Families may wish to use it as a way to independently research further into the different areas of the unit. Have fun exploring!
Don’t forget, children are invited to dress up as an animal and bring in a small donation on Friday 12th October to celebrate the school’s new designated charity for 2018-19, The Yorkshire Wildlife Park!

Hello Y3 parents and carers.

What a fantastic five weeks we’ve had with the children. The time has simply flown by! We have been exploring the life of ancient Egyptians through studying artefacts such as Death masks, mummified cats and cartouches. The children are currently in the throes of describing the story of Howard Carter and his discovery of King Tutankhamen’s tomb. They have worked so hard on rehearsing and forming accurate and engaging sentences that engage the reader. They can’t wait to show them off to you in the future! In other areas of our EPIC curriculum, the Y3s have been learning Physical Literacy skills such as dodging, falling and balancing and having a lot of fun trying to apply them in game situations.

In one of the recent ‘In focus’ maths reasoning tasks, we challenged the children to investigate how to calculate 521 + 231. We always ask them to find three ways to answer the question. How many can you find? How do you know that you are correct? What resources could you use to solve it? Can you generalise a rule and provide some examples to support your thinking? What is the most efficient route to the 'treasure'? Can you connect your understanding to other areas of maths?

The Year 3 'Fine motor skills' workshops are open to all parents and carers each and every Wednesday afternoon from 2:40 to 3:10. Please come and join the children in developing their cutting, ruling, drawing, folding skills! These sessions last for approximately thirty minutes in each off the three classrooms. We look forward to seeing you there.

From all Y3 staff, we wish you a warm welcome to Hunter's Bar Junior School!


We hope you all had a fabulous holiday with family and friends and are ready to begin an exciting new chapter.

We will be spending the first two weeks getting to know the children, learning about school and class routines, understanding what makes an amazing learner and learning about how teamwork and a diverse community can make us happy and  successful.



We look forward to meeting all the children, parents and carers on our first day back.

This term, Y3 pupils will be exploring the arts (music, drama, dance and visual arts) though the classic tale of ‘Peter and the Wolf’. The first line of inquiry simply asks ‘What are the arts?’ Pupils will develop a clear understanding of what the arts are and why they are relevant to them. Please look at our Knowledge Organiser to see the key language and ideas that the children will be learning. Please use it as a springboard to help your child research deeper into the theme and to ask related questions.
