Autumn 1
This first half term in Year 5 we will be settling into the upper school by reintroducing our school vision and values. We will also be studying the Earth and Space in Science, before an exciting trip to the Leicester Space Centre to see real artefacts from outer space! We will also be learning about a very influential person – the incomparable Katherine Johnson, who was a trailblazer in mathematics and space exploration. In art, we will be developing our drawing skills before creating an artwork inspired by artist Henry Moore. In history, we will be learning about the Tudor period including significant events of the period: the Spanish Armada, the creation of the Church of England and Henry VIII’s many wives.
Autumn 2
This half term, we have a focus on ground shaking earthquakes. We will be learning about how and why they occur, where they happen and how we can stay safe. We will use this knowledge to write an informative text about these natural disasters. In design and technology, we will be tasked to design and create a wooden toy that features a working cam mechanism. We will also be learning about our amazing brains: different parts of the brain, their functions and how we can control our actions.
Spring 1
This half term, we travel back in history to the Stuarts. We will be covering the Great Fire of London, the Great Plague and the Gunpowder plot. We will also visit the Stuart period in reading and writing by studying and creating historical fiction. In PSHE, we will be learning all about how we can protect ourselves and others online. In Science, we will be studying materials and their properties carrying out investigations into dissolving, mixing and sieving.
Spring 2
This half term, we will be learning about asylum seekers and refugees. We will be reading the poems of Michael Rosen, which focus on his own personal experiences of displacement and also global experiences of migration. We will be debating the merits of the British government allowing refugees into the UK in writing. We will also be developing our coding skills in computing. In design and technology, we will be developing our sewing skills.
Summer 1
This half term, we will be learning about the Transatlantic Slave Trade. We will be reading Freedom by Catherine Johnson, which is an action-packed story about a boy’s experience of slavery in Britain. We will be studying key events that led to the enslavement of over 12 million Africans from the 16th to 19th Century.
